Move-In Prep: 6 Tasks to Complete Before You Get Comfortable

Moving Day

Moving into a new home is an exciting milestone, but before you get too comfortable, there are a few important tasks to handle that will ensure your safety, security, and comfort. Here are six key things to do as soon as you move in.

1. Change the Locks

You can’t be sure who else might have keys to your new home, so it’s important to change the locks right away. By installing new deadbolts, you’ll be the only one with access. You can do this yourself for as little as $11 per lock, or hire a locksmith, who typically charges $50 to $100 per lock for labor (excluding the cost of the lock itself). It’s an easy step that will provide peace of mind.

2. Inspect for Plumbing Leaks

While your home inspector should have checked for leaks before you closed, it’s always good to verify yourself. Look for signs of dripping faucets, running toilets, and leaks around your water heater. A helpful trick: check your water meter at the start and end of a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the reading changes, you likely have a leak somewhere.

3. Deep Clean Your Carpets

Before you move furniture in, consider steam cleaning the carpets. A fresh start with clean floors makes a huge difference. You can hire a professional for around $100 to $150 depending on the carpet size, or rent a steam cleaner for about $35 to $50. You’ll also need to buy detergent to tackle stubborn stains, typically costing $15 to $25.

4. Wipe Down Your Cabinets

Before filling up your kitchen and bathroom cabinets with dishes and supplies, give them a thorough cleaning, especially if the house has been vacant for a while. It’s common for pests to leave traces behind, so wipe down the interiors and replace any old contact paper. If you do find any signs of pests, take action right away to eliminate them.

5. Invest in Pest Control

From mice and termites to roaches and bats, pests can be an unwanted housemate. If you’ve noticed any signs of infestations, it’s worth bringing in a professional pest control service. Initial visits can cost between $150 to $300, with follow-up visits priced around $40 to $70 per month or $100 to $300 per quarter. A proactive approach can save you from bigger issues down the line.

6. Familiarize Yourself with Key Systems

Get to know the location of your main water valve and circuit breaker box. It’s best to have two people for this: one person flips the breakers or fuses while the other checks if the power is turned off. Also, locate your main water valve—whether it’s inside or outside—and test it by turning it off and running a faucet. Knowing how to shut off your water in an emergency can save you from costly damage.

By tackling these tasks early on, you’ll ensure a smooth and secure transition into your new home.
